Microsoft Exchange Server 2019 Enterprise

Microsoft Exchange Server 2019 Enterprise is the highest-capacity edition of Microsoft's on-premises email platform, designed for large organizations, hosting providers, and multi-tenant environments that require maximum database density per server. The Enterprise edition shares the same codebase and features as Standard but removes the database mount limit, supporting up to 100 mounted databases per server compared to Standard's 5-database limit.

The 100-database limit is the critical differentiator for large-scale deployments. Enterprise customers typically run Database Availability Groups with multiple copies of each database across several servers for high availability. A hosting provider serving 50 tenants with dedicated databases, or a large enterprise with departmental databases spread across geographical regions, quickly exceeds the Standard edition's 5-database ceiling. The Enterprise edition eliminates this constraint entirely.

All features of Exchange Server 2019 Standard are included in the Enterprise edition: the rebuilt Bing-powered search engine, simplified single Mailbox server role architecture, enhanced calendar with room booking and floor plans, Database Availability Groups for automatic failover, TLS 1.2 security, and hybrid deployment capabilities with Microsoft 365.

For compliance-heavy environments, Exchange 2019 Enterprise combined with Enterprise CALs unlocks Data Loss Prevention (DLP) policies that scan email content for sensitive information like credit card numbers, Social Security numbers, and HIPAA-protected health data — automatically blocking or encrypting messages that contain policy violations. In-Place Hold and eDiscovery enable legal teams to place mailboxes on litigation hold and search across the entire messaging infrastructure for regulatory investigations.

Journaling captures a complete copy of all email communications for regulatory archival. In-Place Archiving provides users with an online archive mailbox for older messages, reducing primary mailbox size while keeping historical email searchable and accessible. Information Rights Management (IRM) prevents unauthorized forwarding, copying, and printing of sensitive messages.

The Enterprise edition is licensed per server and requires Exchange Server CALs (Standard or Enterprise) for each accessing user or device. For organizations with more than a handful of databases or those needing enterprise compliance features through Enterprise CALs, this edition provides the scale and capabilities that mission-critical email infrastructure demands.
