Windows Server 2016 Standard

Windows Server 2016 Standard is a foundational release in Microsoft's server operating system lineage that introduced many technologies still central to modern IT infrastructure. For organizations running physical servers or lightly virtualized workloads, Server 2016 Standard provides a mature, well-documented, and cost-effective platform with mainstream support from Microsoft.

The Standard edition is licensed per core (minimum 16 cores per physical server) and includes rights to run up to 2 Windows Server virtual machines on the licensed host. This makes it ideal for small branch offices, single-purpose application servers, file servers, print servers, and web servers where the full virtualization density of the Datacenter edition is not required.

Windows Server 2016 was the first release to introduce Windows Containers and Hyper-V Containers as native features, bringing Docker-based container technology to the Windows platform. Security features include Just Enough Administration (JEA) for role-based access with minimum-privilege PowerShell endpoints, Shielded Virtual Machines that encrypt VMs with BitLocker and restrict them to run only on authorized hosts, and Control Flow Guard for exploit prevention. Windows Defender is available as a lightweight antimalware option for server workloads.

Storage improvements include Storage Spaces Direct (S2D) for software-defined storage using local disks, Storage Replica for synchronous and asynchronous block-level replication between servers or clusters, and deduplication support for volumes up to 64 TB. Networking features include Software Defined Networking (SDN), network controller, and SET (Switch Embedded Teaming).

Windows Server 2016 is in extended support through January 2027, making it a safe choice for organizations that need a stable, proven platform with ongoing security updates.
