In-Memory OLTP (formerly codenamed Hekaton) is the flagship feature, providing memory-optimized tables and natively compiled stored procedures that deliver up to 30x performance improvement for OLTP workloads. By eliminating lock and latch contention through optimistic multi-version concurrency control, In-Memory OLTP enables extreme throughput for high-frequency transaction processing scenarios like financial trading, session management, and real-time data ingestion.

Updatable clustered columnstore indexes enable high-performance data warehousing with up to 10x query performance improvements and 7x data compression compared to traditional rowstore tables. Unlike SQL Server 2012's read-only columnstore indexes, SQL Server 2014 allows direct INSERT, UPDATE, and DELETE operations on columnstore tables, making them practical for real-world analytics workloads where data changes continuously.

Always On Availability Groups received significant improvements including support for up to 8 secondary replicas (up from 4), readable secondaries with automatic page repair, and Windows Azure integration for hybrid disaster recovery. The Standard edition supports Basic Availability Groups for single-database high availability.

Buffer Pool Extension allows the database engine to use SSD storage as an extension of the buffer pool, providing a cost-effective middle tier between RAM and traditional HDD storage. For workloads with working sets larger than available RAM, this can deliver significant read performance improvements without the cost of additional memory.

Backup encryption provides native TDE-independent encryption of database backups using AES 128/192/256 or Triple DES algorithms, ensuring that backup files are protected even if physical media is stolen. Managed backup to Windows Azure automates backup scheduling and retention to Azure Blob Storage for offsite protection.

SQL Server 2014 Standard supports up to 128 GB RAM and 16 cores. It is in extended support through July 2024, with Extended Security Updates available through July 2027 for organizations that need additional coverage.
