Overview

The Windows Server 2019 50 Device CAL pack licenses 50 physical devices to access Windows Server 2019 services, regardless of how many users operate each device. This licensing model is purpose-built for shared computing environments where multiple users rotate through the same hardware throughout the day. Device CALs deliver maximum value in shift-based operations: manufacturing floors where operators share workstations across three shifts, healthcare facilities where nursing stations serve rotating medical staff, educational computer labs where hundreds of students use dozens of shared PCs, and call centers with hot-desking arrangements. Rather than licensing every individual user, you license the fixed number of devices — often 3-10x fewer licenses needed. Each licensed device gains full access to Windows Server 2019 services including Active Directory authentication, file and print sharing, Group Policy, DNS, DHCP, IIS web services, and all other built-in server roles. Any user — employees, contractors, temporary workers, visitors — can use the licensed device without requiring their own CAL. This 50-pack is perpetual and downward compatible with older server versions. The licenses can be reassigned to different devices when hardware is replaced or decommissioned, following Microsoft's 90-day reassignment rule for permanent transfers. Combining Device CALs with User CALs in the same environment is fully supported and recommended for organizations with both dedicated personal workstations (better served by User CALs) and shared terminals (better served by Device CALs). This hybrid approach typically delivers the lowest total licensing cost.
