Microsoft SQL Server 2022 Standard

Overview
A production-grade database engine with a clear, perpetual licence position
Microsoft SQL Server 2022 Standard is the practical, trusted relational database platform for organisations that need to run departmental applications, line-of-business systems, and business intelligence workloads without the complexity and cost of Enterprise edition. This is a perpetual licence purchase—not a rental, not a subscription, and not a metered cloud consumption model. You pay once, you own the licence, and you run it for as long as your deployment remains supported and compliant.
The core benefit is certainty. You get a known, stable, and widely certified database engine that integrates with your existing Windows Server or Linux infrastructure, your backup tools, your monitoring stack, and your team’s existing skills. For procurement teams, database administrators, and managed service providers, this SKU removes ambiguity: it is a 16-core licence pack for Microsoft SQL Server 2022 Standard, delivered digitally with a genuine activation key, a full EU VAT invoice, and the documentation you need to prove your licence position during an audit.
This edition is built for production. It handles ERP databases, reporting stores, web application back ends, vendor-certified platforms, and analytics staging environments. It is not a developer-only sandbox, and it is not a stripped-down Express edition. It is the edition most organisations choose when the workload is important, the budget is finite, and the licensing model must be transparent from day one.
Key features and benefits
- Perpetual licence model – A one-time purchase that grants you the right to run SQL Server 2022 Standard for the lifetime of the deployment. No recurring fees, no forced upgrades, and no surprise renewal invoices.
- 16-core licence pack – Licences exactly two physical or virtual cores under the per-core model. This is the minimum purchase required to licence a single server, giving you a predictable entry point for small to mid-sized database workloads.
- Full production engine – Includes the complete relational database engine, Integration Services, Analysis Services (in tabular and multidimensional modes), and basic high-availability features. You are not locked into a feature-crippled runtime.
- Azure Synapse Link for SQL – Enables near-real-time analytics by replicating data from your on-premises SQL Server directly to Azure Synapse Analytics, without building complex ETL pipelines. Benefit: operational reporting stays current without adding load to your production database.
- Ledger for tamper-evident history – Uses blockchain-style data structures to provide cryptographic proof that your data has not been altered. Benefit: strengthens audit readiness and data integrity for financial records, compliance logs, and sensitive transactional data.
- Contained Availability Groups – Replicate not just your user databases but also the SQL Server Agent jobs, logins, and linked server definitions that support them. Benefit: failover is more complete, reducing manual reconfiguration steps and recovery time.
- Intelligent Query Processing enhancements – Includes Parameter Sensitive Plan optimisation and memory grant feedback improvements that adapt query execution to actual data patterns. Benefit: complex reports and multi-tenant queries run faster without manual tuning.
- Cross-platform deployment – Install on a supported Windows Server edition or on a supported Linux distribution, including Red Hat Enterprise Linux, SUSE Linux Enterprise Server, and Ubuntu. Benefit: your infrastructure team can choose the OS that fits your operational standards and licensing stack.
- Query Store on by default – Automatically captures query performance history, execution plans, and runtime statistics. Benefit: troubleshooting a slow-running application becomes a forensic exercise with historical data, not a guessing game.
- Multilingual installation – The product media supports 23 languages, including English, German, French, Spanish, Dutch, Italian, and Japanese. Benefit: your operations team can install and manage the instance in the language they are most comfortable with.
What’s included with your purchase
When you complete your order, you receive a complete licence package delivered digitally. There is no physical box, no courier delay, and no waiting for a reseller to process paperwork. The package consists of:
- A genuine Microsoft SQL Server 2022 Standard activation key – This is a perpetual licence key sourced from authorised European distribution. It is not an OEM key tied to a specific hardware vendor, not a reused volume licence key, and not a subscription-based key that expires after 12 months.
- A secure download link – You download the installation media directly from Microsoft’s official servers or through a verified channel. You are not downloading from unverified third-party repositories.
- A full EU VAT invoice – The invoice shows the product name, licence type, quantity, price, and applicable VAT. For B2B customers with a valid intra-community VAT number, reverse-charge invoicing is applied.
- Activation guidance – Clear, step-by-step instructions covering how to register your key, activate the instance, and verify your licence status within SQL Server Management Studio or via the command line.
- Licence documentation – A record of your purchase that you should store alongside your deployment documentation. This becomes your audit trail, proving the date of acquisition, the edition, and the core count licenced.
This is a per-core licence. Under the per-core model, you must licence every physical or virtual core in the server or virtual machine running SQL Server, with a minimum of four cores per instance. This 16-core pack covers servers with up to 16 cores. If your server has more cores, you need additional core packs. There is no Server + CAL option for SQL Server 2022 Standard; the per-core model is the primary licensing path for production servers.
Licensing explained: what you need to know
SQL Server licensing can feel like a separate discipline, but the principles for Standard edition are straightforward once you understand the model. This section is not legal advice, but it reflects the published Microsoft licensing rules that apply to this SKU.
Per-core licensing model. SQL Server 2022 Standard is licensed under the per-core model. You count the total number of physical cores in the server (or virtual cores assigned to the virtual machine) and purchase enough core packs to cover every core, subject to a minimum of four cores per processor or per virtual machine. This 16-core pack licences 16 cores. If your server has 8 cores, you still need to purchase a minimum of four cores, but you can use the remaining licence capacity for another virtual machine or server, subject to licence mobility rules.
Do you need CALs? No. The per-core model does not require Client Access Licences. Any number of users or devices can access the SQL Server instance without additional CAL purchases. This is one of the primary reasons organisations choose the per-core model for internet-facing applications, customer portals, or environments where counting users is impractical.
Virtualisation rights. With a fully licenced server (all physical cores covered), you may run any number of instances of SQL Server 2022 Standard in virtual machines on that licenced server. Alternatively, you may licence individual virtual machines by purchasing core packs equal to the number of virtual cores assigned to that VM, with a minimum of four. Licence mobility through Software Assurance is not included with this perpetual licence, but you may reassign the licence to a different server within the same server farm after 90 days.
Standard vs. Datacentre. Standard edition includes the full relational engine, basic high availability (two-node failover clusters), and core business intelligence features. Datacentre edition adds unlimited virtualisation, advanced high availability (Always On Availability Groups with multiple replicas), and performance features such as in-memory OLTP without limits. If you need more than two failover nodes, or if you plan to run dozens of virtualised instances on a single host, Datacentre may be the more cost-effective choice. For most departmental and mid-market production workloads, Standard edition provides the right balance of capability and cost.
System requirements and compatibility
SQL Server 2022 Standard runs on hardware and operating systems that are common in business data centres. The requirements below are drawn from Microsoft’s published specifications. Always verify your specific configuration against the official Microsoft documentation before deployment.
| Component | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Operating system | Supported Windows Server edition (Windows Server 2019 or 2022) or a supported Linux distribution (Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8.x, SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 15.x, Ubuntu 20.04 LTS or 22.04 LTS). Check the exact build numbers for your distribution. |
| Processor | x64-compatible processor with a clock speed and core count sized for your workload. Minimum: 1.4 GHz for a 64-bit processor. Production workloads require significantly more. |
| Memory | Minimum 1 GB for the database engine alone. Realistic production deployments should plan memory based on buffer pool size, query concurrency, reporting overhead, and maintenance operations. A 16 GB to 128 GB range is common for Standard edition workloads. |
| Storage | Resilient, low-latency storage for data files, transaction logs, tempdb, and backup files. Plan for at least 6 GB of free space for the installation binaries, plus your database size multiplied by growth projections and maintenance operations such as index rebuilds. |
| Network | Stable TCP/IP connectivity between the database server and all clients, replication partners, backup targets, and monitoring tools. |
| Internet | Required for digital delivery of your licence and installation media. May be required for activation, depending on your deployment method. |
Language support. The product media includes installation and user interface support for 23 languages: English, German, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Japanese, Polish, Dutch, Italian, Czech, Swedish, Danish, Finnish, Norwegian (Bokmål), Greek, Hungarian, Romanian, Slovak, Slovenian, Croatian, Bulgarian, Estonian, Lithuanian, and Latvian. You can install multiple language packs and switch between them.
Installation and activation
Your licence key is delivered by email immediately after payment is confirmed. The average delivery time is under 60 seconds, though during peak periods or manual fraud checks it may take a few minutes. Check your spam folder if the email does not appear in your inbox.
Installation steps:
- Download the SQL Server 2022 installation media from the official Microsoft link provided with your purchase.
- Run the setup wizard on your target server. Select “New SQL Server stand-alone installation.”
- When prompted, enter the product key you received by email.
- Choose the features you need: Database Engine Services is required; Integration Services, Analysis Services, and client tools are optional.
- Configure instance settings, service accounts, and collation according to your organisation’s standards.
- Complete the installation and apply the latest cumulative update from Microsoft.
Activation occurs when you enter the product key during setup or afterwards through SQL Server Installation Centre. The instance will validate the key against Microsoft’s activation servers. If your server does not have internet access, offline activation by telephone is available.
Reinstallation. Your perpetual licence allows you to uninstall and reinstall SQL Server 2022 Standard on the same server as many times as needed. If you decommission the original server, you may reassign the licence to a new server after 90 days, in accordance with Microsoft’s licence terms.
If activation fails, Distivo’s multilingual support team is available to help you troubleshoot. Common issues include entering the key for the wrong edition (Standard vs. Datacentre), attempting to activate on an unsupported operating system, or network restrictions blocking activation traffic.
Why choose Distivo for your software licences
When you buy a SQL Server licence, you are not just buying a product key. You are buying a licence position that must stand up to scrutiny during a vendor audit, a merger, or a compliance review. Distivo exists because businesses need a licence retailer that treats the transaction as the start of a compliance record, not the end of a shopping cart session.
Every licence we sell is sourced through authorised European distribution channels and verified before it reaches you. You receive a genuine, unmodified activation key that activates directly with Microsoft’s servers. Your purchase is protected by EU consumer law, including the 14-day right of withdrawal, and by the European warranty framework that applies to digital goods. You also receive a full VAT invoice that your finance team can use for tax recovery and audit documentation. For B2B buyers with a valid EU VAT ID, reverse-charge invoicing is applied automatically at checkout.
Our checkout is secured by Stripe, the same payment infrastructure used by thousands of European businesses. You can pay by SEPA bank transfer, iDEAL, BLIK, Google Pay, or major credit and debit cards. Your payment details are never stored on our servers. After payment, your licence key is delivered by email in under a minute on average, and our support team speaks your language—whether that is English, German, French, Dutch, or any of the other languages we cover.
We hold inventory so that you do not wait. We provide documentation so that you can prove your licence. And we stand behind every sale with a 14-day refund policy and free technical support that actually understands SQL Server licensing.
FAQ — frequently asked questions
Is this a subscription or a one-time purchase?
This is a one-time, perpetual licence purchase. You pay once and own the right to run SQL Server 2022 Standard for the lifetime of the deployment. There are no monthly or annual fees, and the licence does not expire. This is different from subscription-based licences or Azure consumption models that require ongoing payments.
What is the difference between a per-core licence and a Server + CAL licence?
SQL Server 2022 Standard is licensed under the per-core model. You count the physical or virtual cores in your server and buy enough core packs to cover every core (minimum four per instance). No Client Access Licences are required. The older Server + CAL model, which charged separately for the server and each user or device, is not available for SQL Server 2022 Standard production deployments.
How fast do I get my licence key?
Your licence key is delivered by email immediately after your payment is confirmed. The average delivery time is under 60 seconds. In rare cases where a manual fraud check is required, delivery may take a few minutes. If you do not see the email, check your spam folder and then contact our support team.
Is this a genuine, legal Microsoft licence?
Yes. Every licence we sell is sourced from authorised European distributors and is a genuine Microsoft product key. It activates directly with Microsoft’s activation servers and is fully compliant with Microsoft’s licensing terms for perpetual licences sold in the European Union.
What if I have trouble activating?
Contact Distivo support. Our team can help you verify that you are using the correct edition key, that your operating system is supported, and that your server can reach Microsoft’s activation servers. If offline activation is required, we can guide you through the telephone activation process.
Can I reinstall or transfer the licence to another server?
You may uninstall and reinstall SQL Server 2022 Standard on the same server as many times as you need. If you want to move the licence to a different server permanently, Microsoft’s licensing terms allow reassignment after 90 days. You may not use the same licence on two servers simultaneously.
Does this licence work in my country?
This licence is valid for activation and use in all 27 European Union member states. If you are deploying outside the EU, verify that the licence terms are compatible with your local jurisdiction. The product itself supports 23 languages and runs on standard x64 hardware worldwide.
What payment methods do you accept?
We accept SEPA bank transfers, iDEAL, BLIK, Google Pay, and major credit and debit cards including Visa and Mastercard. All payments are processed securely through Stripe, and your payment details are never stored on our servers.
Do you provide a VAT invoice?
Yes. Every purchase includes a full EU VAT invoice showing the product name, licence type, quantity, price, and applicable VAT. For B2B customers with a valid intra-community VAT number, reverse-charge invoicing is applied so that no VAT is charged at the point of sale.
What is your refund policy?
We offer a 14-day refund right in accordance with EU consumer protection law. If the licence key has not been activated and the product has not been used, you may request a full refund within 14 days of purchase. Contact our support team to initiate the process.
Do I need to buy Windows Server separately?
Yes. This SKU is for Microsoft SQL Server 2022 Standard only. It does not include a Windows Server licence, a Client Access Licence for Windows Server, or any other infrastructure licence. You must have a properly licensed operating system before installing SQL Server.
Can I run this on Linux?
Yes. SQL Server 2022 Standard is fully supported on Red Hat Enterprise Linux, SUSE Linux Enterprise Server, and Ubuntu. The same licence key works regardless of the operating system you choose. Installation packages and setup instructions for Linux are included in the official Microsoft download.
